Asbestos is a hazardous class of minerals, so great care needs to be taken when removing it. There are six different naturally occurring fibrous minerals that fall under the term ‘asbestos’: amosite, chrysotile, crocidolite, tremolite, actinolite, and anthophyllite.
Asbestos is no longer mined in the US, but still can be found in older homes and buildings. According to the R.I. Department of Health (RIDOH), it also can be found in steam pipe and boiler insulation, resilient floor tiles, exterior siding, roofing shingles, adhesives, fireproof wallboard, caulking compounds, textured paints, sound proofing, gypsum board and wall and ceiling plasters.
If you need to remove or repair something that contains asbestos, it is very important that properly trained professionals do the work. Disturbing asbestos can release tiny fibers of it into the air and if inhaled can cause asbestos-related diseases that can be serious or even fatal.
